About me

I am a Psychotherapist and Counsellor in Wokingham, Berkshire. I have been working within mental health since 2005.

I received my training in psychotherapy and counselling at the University of Roehampton where I received the qualification of Doctor of Psychology in Psychotherapy and Counselling. I have worked at the Cardinal Clinic in Windsor, The Priory in London, Wokingham Psychology at Woosehill Medical Centre and for the Berkshire Eating Disorder Service within Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. My positions have included senior management as well as in a clinical capacity. In addition to my clinical work, I am a spokesperson for the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Chair of Digitial and Social Media for the Southern Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (SAFPAC). My approach to counselling and psychotherapy is to see the client as an individual taking into consideration their life experiences including cultural, social and family dynamics. I help people who have been diagnosed with a wide range of psychiatric disorders however place more emphasis on the person's experiences than the name of any diagnosis they come to see me about.

Psychologist in Wokingham
General mental health issues such as Depression and Anxiety

The majority of my clinical work is in the field of anxiety and depression related disorders including obsessive compulsive disorder, panic attacks, clinical depression and generalised anxiety disorder. I utilise a number of different psychological techniques and tailor these to the patients needs. This can include elemnts of cognitive beahvioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and psychoanalyisis. I will often work with other healthcare professionals such as the patient's GP, consultant psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, counsellors and occupational therapists.

In addition to general mental health and life difficulties I have an specialist clinical interest in Eating Disorders. Eating Disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating disorder contain a mixture of psychological and physical complications and it is important that both these aspects are addressed as Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate of all psychological disorders. Many eating disorder patients require specific blood investigations and medically monitoring which is why the assessment, treatment and management of eating disorders requires specific practitioners who have worked within the field of eating disorders and can understand the effects of starvation on the brain to ensure a safe recovery.

Additional clinical interest in Eating Disorders

I have worked within the field of eating disorders for many years, whilst working alongside Dr Lalitha de Silva, consultant psychiatrist specialising in eating disorders. Between 2015 and 2017 I facilitated the Eating Distress and Dietary Chaos psychological group programme within the Eating Disorder service at Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. In 2016 and 2017 I was a member of the British Psychological Society's (BPS) eating disorder working group resource committee and currently am a professional advisor to a national Eating Disorder charity called Anorexia Bulimia Care, providing input in relation to the psychological implications of unhealthy relationships with food. I regularly speak to the media on aspects relating to eating disorders and body image and am a spokesperson for the UKCP on eating disorders and body image.
